Raspberry Pi primer

Next club meeting, the 18th July, will have an introduction to the Raspberry Pi. This little, cheap and versatile computer has been a British success story. The club has 2 of them, one runs the APRS iGate and the other is a server for the WebSDR.

We’ll run through the basics of where to get hold of one, how to load an operating system and how you can interact with them, including the dreaded command line!

WebSDR

After a bit of tinkering around the WebSDR is now undergoing a bit of testing. The set up is a Cross Country Wireless SDR4+ and active antenna connected to a Raspberry Pi that is running a server. This will send the data from the RPi to the Web address we’ve given it (mx0wrc.ddns.net) as it is a static IP and to the main WebSDR webpage

At the time of writing there are 163 servers. Ours is number 163!

The band we have chosen is the 10m band and the bandwidth allows us to share the psk section as well as a bit of the ssb section. This may change as we have access to more than just the 10m band but currently just the one. When you click on the link it will take you to the standard WebSDR screen which will look a little bit like this.

If any of the members or readers have a spare 19 inch rack that is going free to a worthwhile cause then we’d be happy to use it for our web experiments. I hope you enjoy using it and as always feedback is welcome

Raspberry PiGate Presentation

Next meeting, 20th June, will have a short presentation and Q&A session on the Raspberry Pi and RTL-SDR dongle based APRS iGate that now resides at the club. It is a chance to understand how to use the versatile and cheap RTL-SDR dongle and that Raspberry Pi gathering dust in the corner of your shack as an APRS iGate.

The MX0WRC iGate can be seen on APRS.fi and was set up using the direwolf software and was easy enough to do. There is plenty of scope to hook one up to an existing 2m rig, develop your own digipeater or even listen out for the ISS as it passes over.

VHF NFD

A reminder that the VHF National Field Day will be running from Saturday 2nd to Sunday 3rd July. Andrew, G4VFL is once again in charge of events and this year will see us enter into the 23cms category.

We will, as always, need volunteers to help set up on Saturday (nominally early afternoon), to help with the operating of the station during the contest and again to help take everything down again on the Sunday. If you can spare a couple of hours on the top of Corney Fell then please come along and help out. Better still let Andrew know what you’d like to be involved with and I’m sure he can find a way to accommodate what you’re after.

 

Paint The Town Red

Dale will be in Workington as part of the Raynet support to paint the town red. He has offered some space for any club members who wish to do so, use the tent for a club stand / station.

If you’d like to help the set up will be from 8am on Saturday 4th June in Vulcan Park. He needs to know is what you’ll be doing so he can sound knowledgeable. Attached is a brochure of the event and here’s a link to the Facebook page

Meeting 9th May

The next meeting on the 9th May will have the SatNOGS contraption being demonstrated. With a fair wind we will be able to interface with the website and dive the rotator through the internet, schedule a pass and generally understand a little ore about how to view not just the amateur radio satellites but also some of the other bodies orbiting the earth

We will also potentially have Paul Fleck, VE3HTF dropping by if he’s allowed out. You may remember Paul from a few years ago when he visited previously the club. Paul is a member of the Hamilton radio club but also has links with family in Workington.

Don’t forget the net on Sunday @11:00 hrs and the Thursday night natter on GB3DG @ 19:30 hrs and this weeks UKAC contest is 70cms

SatNOGS successfully tracking

There have been a few teething issues that needed ironing out with the SatNOGS project. An issue with the client software was proving a little hard to track down but eventually resolved with ownership and ability to ready from root owned files looked like it was the culprit. After a fresh Jessie install was done on the Raspberry Pi and a rebuild of the new software both the client and Kal worked (after a chmod & chown) . The only thing left to do was schedule an observation without antenna’s to confirm it would track.

Good News!

The rotator followed the ISS as hoped, so I happy to report the system is ready for tidying up, the electronics being boxed up and it being sited at the museum.

Don’t forget we’re supporting the local scouts at Ennerdale on the 3oth April. We’ll be setting up a simple HF station and using the pmr hand helds as well as a PC with some CW software to entertain cubs and beavers. Set up will be on the Friday evening at the camp group.
